Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
(Dendrocopos minor)
The miniature drummer
Tiny but tenacious, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is the smallest member of its family in Europe. Despite its size, it thrives in the Vršac Mountains, especially around low mixed forests, orchard edges, and village woodlands. Often heard before seen, this elusive drummer is a delight for those patient enough to catch a glimpse. Though it rarely visits our hides directly, it frequents nearby areas—offering rewarding moments for alert photographers.
