Middle Spotted Woodpecker
(Dendrocopos medius)
The soft-spoken specialist
With its pale red crown and love for decaying wood, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker is one of the most regular guests at our hides in the Vršac Mountains. Active year-round, it favors lowland oak forests rich in dead branches and old trunks—ideal for nesting and foraging. Though quieter than its larger cousin, its presence is steady, making it a reliable and photogenic subject for bird photography throughout all seasons.
Observed in hides: All hides.
Seasons of observation: Year round.
