Black Woodpecker
(Dryocopus martius)
The midnight drummer
The largest European woodpecker, the Black Woodpecker is a striking, all-black bird with a flaming red crest. In the Vršac Mountains, it haunts old, tall forests and ravines, especially in moist valleys. Though it hasn’t landed at our hides yet, it’s frequently spotted nearby—and once it discovers the food, we hope to see this powerful percussionist up close. A true icon of Europe’s deep woods.
Observed in hides: Malo Srediste Waterhole, Malo Srediste Woodpecker Hide.
Seasons of observation: Year round.
Probability observed: Very low.
